Chapter 42

BEND

Chuang Tzu said, “Flow with whatever is happening, and let your mind be free. Stay centered by accepting whatever you are doing. This is the ultimate.”

Once upon a time, there was a field containing The Buckwheat, The Willow Tree, The Flowers, and The Corn.

As the storm approached, The Willow Tree bowed with humility, and encouraged The Buckwheat to do the same.

The Buckwheat had a big ego, and decided that she wanted the storm to see how strong she was. She wanted to stand tall in the face of The Storm.

The Flowers bowed their heads and folded their leaves, pleading with The Buckwheat to do the same. Again, The Buckwheat refused—insisting she would stand firm in her position. The Buckwheat wasn’t one to back down.

The Corn bent down low, begging The Buckwheat to stop being so stubborn. The Buckwheat wasn’t trying to hear it; she was determined to make her stand. She was a diva.

After The Storm passed, The Willow Tree, The Flowers, and The Corn sprang up, feeling full of life. Unfortunately, The Storm brought an unexpected friend—The Lightning.

The Buckwheat stood firm in the face of The Storm, but she also saw The Lightning—and was burnt to blackness. The stubborn Buckwheat was left for dead—all because she refused to be flexible, and bend with the storm.

“Oh, no she dit int,” said The Corn.

“Oh, yes she did,” replied The Flowers.
